Overview of Vision Impairments

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) recognizes vision impairments as an eligible condition for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) when the vision loss is severe, prolonged (lasting at least 12 consecutive months), and significantly limits daily activities. Vision impairments include complete blindness or substantial visual impairment that affects the ability to see, even with corrective lenses.

Conditions that may qualify include macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy, optic nerve damage, or vision loss due to injury or neurological conditions. To be eligible, an individual must have a visual acuity of 20/200 (6/60) or worse in the better eye with corrective lenses or a field of vision limited to 20 degrees or less.

The DTC offers tax relief, access to benefits like the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), and potential retroactive tax refunds for up to 10 years. A qualified optometrist or medical practitioner must complete Form T2201 to certify the severity of the vision impairment.

6 Key Signs of Vision Impairments
  1. Severe Visual Acuity Loss – Difficulty seeing clearly even with corrective lenses (20/200 vision or worse).
  2. Restricted Field of Vision – Limited peripheral vision (tunnel vision) with a field of 20 degrees or less.
  3. Challenges with Daily Tasks – Difficulty reading, recognizing faces, or navigating spaces independently.
  4. Dependence on Assistive Devices – Uses canes, magnifiers, screen readers, or guide dogs for mobility and communication.
  5. Sensitivity to Light or Glare – Trouble seeing in bright environments or adjusting to changing light levels.
  6. Risk of Accidents or Falls – Difficulty detecting obstacles or changes in terrain, leading to safety concerns.

If severe vision loss is impacting your daily life, you may be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit. A healthcare professional can guide you through the application process to help you access valuable tax benefits.
